Constipation and Your Dog
Posted By kymom on December 13, 2011
For anyone not sure of the actual definition of constipation, it is the “difficult or infrequent emptying of the bowels”. And it’s not just for humans. Your dog may also get constipated.
Here are some things that can cause constipation in dogs:
- What you feed your dog. Any food with alot of sugar, flour, rice or high protein can cause constipation.
- Not enough fiber in the meals you feed your dog.
- Not drinking enough water.
- Lack of enough exercise.
- Eating from your dinner table.
- Stress and poor hygiene.
What’s the answer? What can you do to help cure your dogs constipation?
-Try to keep your dog on a healthy diet and let him get enough exercise. Walking your dog twice a day will help stimulate his bowels. If you can’t find the time do walk your dog twice a day, be sure to do it at least once. It is crucial to his health.
-Consider hiring a Dog Walker. Their fees are very reasonable and they can help your dog to get the exercise he needs. They are easy to find. Just look in the phonebook or search online under Dog Walking Services. Don’t worry, they are all big time animal lovers and you can trust them with your dog.
-Try two teaspoonfuls of bran mixed with his meal. That should be a quick remedy.
-Make sure your dog has plenty of water to drink. He will need the hydration to be able to pass stool easily.
-If your dog is already constipated and is having difficulty moving his bowels, add two teaspoons of mineral oil to what he eats twice a day for a week.
If you follow these suggestions it may keep you from even having to pay a visit to the vet for constipation. If your dog does get constipated, though, and does not improve after you have tried these home remedies, give your vet a call. Especially if you notice his appetite slowing down or if he passes blood in his stool.
