How to Recognize Acid Reflux Symptoms
Posted By kymom on December 16, 2011
Acid reflux is the term used to describe the regurgitation of the stomach contents back up into the esophagus and throat. It is also known as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). It can become very serious when left untreated and its symptoms should be spotted quickly to avoid complications.
The main cause of acid reflux is the malfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter, which is the valve connecting the lower end of the esophagus to the stomach. Poor diet and an unhealthy lifestyle also contribute to acid reflux symptoms, as well as other physical conditions.
Some of the complications of untreated acid reflux symptoms are esophageal lesions, damage to the throat, gastrointestinal disorders and breathing problems. Acid reflux can become chronic and will require ongoing treatement. For some, surgery is the best alternative to overcome their acid reflux.
It is not uncommon for acid reflux to be present in babies and young children. The symptoms of acid reflux usually disappear in babies over time. It can, however, persist for years and cause damage to their stomach and intestines as well as their esophagus. In babies, acid reflux symptoms are: spitting up, vomiting, coughing, irritability, discomfort when feeding and even the presence of blood in their stool. These symptoms will worsen over time if the child is left untreated.
Here are the most common acid reflux symptoms in adults:
- abdominal pain
- bad breath
- bitter taste in mouth
- increased amounts of salive
- nonrefreshing sleep
In addition to sleeping poorly, persons with acid reflux can develop sleep apnea, which is a breathing disorder during sleep. Untreated sleep apnea also has long term complications of its own.
When left untreated, acid reflux symptoms in adults can become worse and include difficulty swallowing, burning in the chest, poor appetite with nausea, blood in the stool, throat inflammation and pain and even breathing difficulties. Serious damage can occur to the esophagus from repeated exposure to stomach acid.
It is best to seek treatment for acid reflux as soon as possible to avoid any long term and serious complications.

Sleep Apnea is really annoying and sometimes it is an indication of another disease in the body…”
